“Where do I fit in??”

As a Stepmom Coach, this is the hardest question to answer.

Why? The role is so fluid. It changes with every season. Sometimes by the minute.

If you go from part-time stepmom to full-time (or vice versa), it REALLY changes.

If you’re in a blended/stepfamily situation, I would venture to say a lot of people have gone through their partner’s phone.

To see the call log/history.

To see the texts.

To go through and read OLD (pre you) texts.

If you haven’t? 👏

If you have, here’s my advice: DON’T.

Here’s why.

If you’re looking for something, you’re probably going to find it. You can easily misconstrue anything.

If you’re on a group chat and they’ve been texting individually, take that up with your partner.

Last thing: if you find yourself sneaking through your partner’s phone, ask yourself why? Are you feeling insecure? Do you have a reason to feel like you need to? If so, have a conversation about it.

If you’re going through it to “reassure” yourself, it won’t work. It actually breeds that need of reassurance and makes things harder in the long run.

Why would you talk about being a stepmom???!

Here’s why:

A lot of the “support” for stepmoms sucks. It’s not helpful. Bashing the other house gets you NOWHERE. Complaining about how HARD being a stepmom gets you…ALSO…nowhere.

Stepmoms are expected to do all the things, but never struggle or be frustrated or be overwhelmed or stress or (insert alllll the emotions). When the reality of the situation is this: we are in a role that seemingly makes us “damned if we do and damned if we don’t”. Step up? It’s too much. Those aren’t your kids. Step back? It’s because you don’t care, you evil stepmom you. 🫠

There’s no playbook for “how to be a stepmom”. You just kind of oh-so-slowly figure it out. The other shoe seems to hang in the air waiting to drop. As a stepmom, you have no idea what’s “normal” and what you can/should to do help alleviate things.

That’s where I come in. SUPPORTIVE content for stepmom. Encouraging content. Showing real feelings of stepmoms WITHOUT the shame. Helpful tips to navigate the messy parts.

Here’s why: you need a place where you can go and just be YOU.

Where you can go to breathe. To cry. To scream. To make a phone call to vent. To post in The Stepmom Side Community. To just be YOU.

Kids are a lot. The noise. The mess the chaos.

You need a place to shut all of that out. To recalibrate.

Cue awkward silence: you just mentioned that you are a stepmom and a stranger (STRANGER!) asks if you and the ex get along.

Like, what??

Did you not hear all of the other things I mentioned? I’m a mom, wife, friend, traveler, gardener, reader, runner, etc, but you chose to focus on me being a stepmom and want to know what my relationship with the ex is?

It tells you a lot about the other person. 🫠

Do you ever feel like “nothing” changes? Yep.

Do you ever feel like “nothing” changes?

Yep. You and every other stepmom I’ve talked to.

Sometimes, it’s a little hard to see outside of your situation.

It’s hard to see how the small changes pay off in dividends down the road. A week later. A month later. A few months later. Years later.

Knotting one stitch at a time (takes foreverrrrrr) is like getting coaching and figuring out what small changes to make. At first, it feels like it doesn’t matter. Like it’s not moving the needle in your family. It feels like “what’s the point??” #relatable

Then, my friend, you look back and see that all of those littttttle things added up the peace you’ve got in your family.

You can’t believe that THIS is your life.

One without so much conflict. One without the ex running around in your head all day. One where you have sooooo much less anxiety about transition days.
